Elizabeth ClarkCurrent ResearchSWOT: Surface Water and Ocean Topography MissionDue to the scarcity of ground-based hydrologic monitoring systems, especially in "developing" nations, global-scale studies of the hydrologic cycle depend largely on broad-based assumptions and interpolated meteorological data. Models have been used to approximate the discharge patterns on large un-gauged rivers. These challenges make the possibility of incorporating satellite data into hydrologic studies highly desirable. The planned NASA-CNES SWOT satellite mission is designed to measure water surface elevations over global rivers, lakes, reservoirs and wetlands during a 22-day repeat cycle.
